6 Questions: with Firelei Báez

Accompanying the exhibition Firelei Báez: To See Beyond, Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH, May 18 — August 19, 2018.

Paper. Canvas. Sunlight from memory. Sit down with Firelei Báez and discover that there's more to her than what you see in the galleries. Experience the vibrance and power of ‘To See Beyond’ at the CAC, now through August 19. Firelei Báez navigates a broad spectrum of color, race and identity in her first Ohio exhibition. Born in the Dominican Republic to Dominican and Haitian parents, she immigrated to the United States in 1990 and was increasingly troubled by the restraints of her ethnicity wedged within confining American designations. Báez creates intricate paintings, murals, sculpture and works on paper to re-animate the complexity of being Afro-Latina and invite a greater congregation of cultural tradition.
