Art Dubai 2018

Val Britton, Yamini Nayar, and Peter Young

March 21 - 24, 2018 | Madinat Jumeirah, Al Sufouh Road, Umm Suqeim, Dubai, UAE | Booth 9

For Art Dubai 2018, Gallery Wendi Norris presents three artists whose work explores the mysterious notions found in places unknown or unattainable.

Peter Young, America’s first post-modern painter who has also been referred to as an abstract surrealist, traveled to indigenous Central and South American cultures, finding inspiration at a time when his peers were fashionably looking inward.  We will exhibit one of his four legendary star paintings from 1967, a minimalist approach to a native interpretation of the cosmos.

Yamini Nayar’s abstract, modernist-looking photos are equal parts sculpture, painting and photography.  From her love of Brutalist architecture, she peruses imperfections found in the Corbusier’s Utopian city of Chandigarh, India as well as those decaying parts of Detroit, the flailing American city where she was born.  Her laborious process of building sculptural constructs in her studio, obsessively photographing them only to release the one perfect image, reflects a burning desire to discover those imaginary amalgamations presented in her photos.  We will present two new works, medium to large scale in nature, leading up to her solo exhibitions in India and San Francisco.

Val Britton will construct a site-specific, fragmented hanging sculpture made entirely of hand painted and hand cut paper.  In keeping with her studio practice, the shapes and imagery will be loosely based on historical topographical maps of the Middle East.  This work, emblematic of her public installations at Facebook, in Houston, and across California, ultimately represent imaginary landscapes, networks and interstellar systems.  The very nature of these installations evoke wanderlust, a desire to be open, to explore and to dream.
